Week 4 - Apple GiveBack

Nowadays, the speed of upgrading electronic products is far beyond our imagination. Especially mobile phones. With the update of technology, more and more old mobile phones are gradually phased out, and the replacement speed of mobile phones also increases accordingly. As a result, a variety of e-waste of waste mobile phones increases, and many electronic components are very serious for environmental pollution.

In order to maximize the use of old mobile phones and effectively improve the utilization of resources and protect the environment; Mobile phone giant Apple has also started recycling resources of mobile phone electronic components. The GiveBack is part of Apple's environmental program, announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2018. The aim is to raise public awareness of existing environmental problems and mobilize the public to participate in the environmental movement, through green and low-carbon living, improve the overall environment of the earth. Apple will make a donation to the conservation international foundation for every iPhone that is recycled through the recycling program. The company also said that consumers who donate their old iPhones will also receive vouchers or Apple gift cards that can be used in the store to purchase new devices.

" Daisy"

The first-generation mobile phone disassembling robot Liam has been far from meeting the demand of Apple for recycling mobile phone electronic components. Apple needs a disassembling robot capable of handling multiple types of mobile phones. So Apple has developed Daisy, a second-generation iPhone recycling robot that looks about 30 feet long and can disassemble a phone with just five robotic arms. At full load, Daisy can disassemble 200 iPhones in an hour, that is, disassemble an iPhone every 18 seconds. Although the disassembly speed is slower than Liam, it can handle nine different iPhone models. And Daisy doesn't even need to change the robot arm or stop using it when switching between various models. The whole machine is completely automated production processing mode. This not only reduces the environmental threat of old batteries. Moreover, the recycling process of mobile phone components is handled by automated robots, which avoids human exposure to harmful substances.

Apple's goal is to achieve a "closed-loop" supply chain, where all companies' products are made from recyclable or renewable materials, thereby returning the same amount of materials to the market and driving the planet's environmental cause.
