Week 7.1 - Santiago Island sustainable management

Santiago Island is located in the southeastern part of the North Atlantic. The region's ecological environment is fragile and volcanic activity is frequent. Sustained earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and steep terrain have caused island land use restrictions, environmental pollution, and extremely fragile ecosystems. As land resources become increasingly scarce, the maintenance and improvement of island ecosystems is becoming increasingly important for the ecological security of the island. Therefore, according to the intrinsic value and constraints of the island, Santiago island has established the island planning and ecological governance system and defined the importance, role and participation forms of all stakeholders. The purpose is to strengthen the concept and practice of citizen protection and enhance the ecological management ability of different identity islanders. citizens, politicians, investors or developers are fully and consciously involved in management and are able to supervise decision makers of land use.

Sustainable management strategies:

Incentives and Constraints - Santiago Island tends to achieve contractualization, accountability, and compensation for island ecosystem protection and management. Contractualization establishes different forms of agreements with different types of stakeholders, clarifying responsibilities, compensation, accountability, and guarantees to ensure that different contractors can identify and control all matters.

Due to the extremely limited resources of the island, the island of Santiago collects the sample information of the island system and uses the comprehensive reference system to repeatedly evaluate the resource management plan that ensures the active participation of all stakeholders and optimize the management plan of each region and period. The assessment process is based on two criteria: current and potential conservation values, including protection and restoration of the ecological environment, natural functions, biodiversity, and other benefits; social values, current and potential economic value, and social welfare.

By understanding the protection management mechanism of the island of Santiago, the management of the island should establish a development constraint and guidance system based on the island ecosystem. The idea of "ecology" should run through the whole process of island protection, combining island protection with production and living conditions in the island area. It is believed that this will ensure the ecological security of the island and the sustainable economic and social development of the island.
